  • Your Drafty Windows Are Costing More Than You Think

The cost of energy goes up every year, and it’s not going to stop anytime soon. What can you do about it? You can’t exactly make your own fuel oil, natural gas or electricity. But you can use your energy more efficiently. If you have old windows, it’s possible you’re losing a chunk of change due to your heat escaping through drafty windows.

How to tell if your Windows are Drafty

This is a pretty simple thing to do - simply take a tissue and tear a one inch strip off. Now tape this thin strip of tissue to a pencil. Now you have yourself a makeshift draft tester. You’ll be able to figure out if your windows are allowing air to enter or escape, and how fast. Simply take this draft tester and hold it about an inch off your window, and move it along the entire window and all the window’s edges. It shouldn’t take you long to figure out if your windows are good or if they need some attention. For best results do this on a windy or cold day. Frost appearing on the inside of your windows during the winter is a dead giveaway that your window isn’t sealed properly.

I have Drafty Windows - Now What?

Let’s say you have a 1/8 inch opening around just two door frames. That small amount of draft can let in as much cold air as a 12 inch window opened 6 inches all winter long! Can you imagine that? That’s a lot of heat loss! You have two choices. Spend money bandaging your problems by using weatherstripping & sealer kits and hope that they last more then one season. Or invest in new windows and fix the problem once and for all. The longer you plan on living at your house, the more you’ll end up saving over time.

    Leave it to the Pros
